The original soundtrack by Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and 3D, one-half of Massive Attack, also known as Robert Del Naja, in collaboration with Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood, Massive Attack producer-engineer Euan Dickinson and Elbow’s Guy Garvey for the documentary The UK Gold, an award-winning film about tax “avoidance”, was released for free on a UK protest site three days ago.
I’m generally a calm and easy-going kind of person but this evening, I was overtaken by a state of extreme agitation after watching a music video. I experienced a mild feeling of irritability that eventually turned into full-on shivers down my spine, like a low that comes at the end of a liquid sugar rush. It is a scientific marvel, and may well be the first time that anyone has ever caught a disease directly through an iPhone. There is a name for it: Dengue Fever.

When I arrived in Paris last Sunday, Jan 11, in the aftermath of last week’s terrorist attack on Charlie Hebdo and the largest public manifestation of solidarity in France since the liberation at the end of WWII, I was struck by the calmness and serenity that both the city and its people radiated.
Time: May, Memorial Day weekend 1985
Place: Lime Rock Park, a road course racetrack near New Canaan, Connecticut, USA
This was my first race and my third racecar experience, two years after my first racing school and almost two months after my second racing school adventure at the Elf/Winfield racing school in Le Castellet, France. Here we were, doing the thing that I wanted to do most, racing. With me were my mom and dad, my friend, Ms. Lee Brown, John and Valerie (now) Miller, Chris and Pam (now) Meyer, and my dog Barney.
At the corner of Bathurst and Bloor in Toronto’s Mirvish Village stands the beacon of the neighbourhood, although hollowed out only moments ago, still cradles rows of boutiques, retro stores, a wine shop and assorted gems like Bite & Sip. It’s a tiny little snack shack, a mere morsel, tucked into the belly of what was the giant carryall store Honest Ed’s. Run by its owner Milka Cobanov, from the former Yugoslavia, Bite & Sip is like a variety store for snacks.
Drake seizes the opportunity to outfit fans with legit merchandise with his official stamp of approval. They lined up around the block and down the graffiti-tagged alleyway and they did so pretty much all day, said neighbouring retail owner Bev Hisey. [More photos added]
Finnish Metal Rock Goddess with an Operatic Voice
Music bridges the generational gap between a grandmother, a mother and a daughter. Orietta Salinas revisits her coming of age story through the act of taking her daughter to her first rock concert in metropolitan Santiago.
My daughter turned 13 and on her birthday my friend Muriel gave her a black T-shirt with Tarja Turunen’s face and bewitching green eyes. “Oh, it’s just what I wanted!” my newbie teenager screeched, hands on cheeks, eyes wide with joy. “The best part,” added Muriel, “is that Tarja is coming to Santiago next month to give a concert”. My daughter was stunned as she turned to me, “mom…please?”
…or A Thousand Mile Journey on an Open Road
The original Mille Miglia was a 1,000-mile, full-speed car race run on open, public roads in Italy from 1927 to ’57. Many legendary drivers and carmakers participated in it. For the times, it was a very long race full of danger, calamity and, for some, triumph.
I welded the first few pieces of steel together for this project in 2011, a few months after my mother died, but this journey began nearly 50 years ago. I am building a ’74 AMC Javelin racecar that is, to this point, a culmination of my history, my dreams, and, for the most part, my identity.
