Salt Petal – Por La Luna

by Jessica Mora

Salt Petal, if you haven’t yet heard, is the tropical rock band that has been establishing themselves as LA’s Latin Dance pop darlings. Playing everywhere from major festivals to local venues, they win over their audience at every performance.

LA band Salt Petal releases a new video for their song Por La Luna from the album Sea Monster. Watch it here.

Catch Salt Petal’s new organic surf sound, a blend of latin-infused indie rock with percussion over playful base, mixed with tinny stringed instruments, trumpets and trombones in a mélange of harmonies carried by the silky high notes of their lead vocalist. Watch them dance barefoot down back alleyways in a Louisiana-style jazz procession until sunset when they wind up on the beach. As an added bonus, the video captures local street art to share with those of us who happen to live outside LA.

Los Angeles-based Salt Petal reflects the cultural diversity of the city by incorporating influences from Argentinean folk, Brazilian Tropicália, Cumbia, and up-tempo indie rock. The musical collective showcases South American rhythms with vibrant indie rock harmonies and textures.

Salt Petal has played high-profile venues and festivals such as SXSW, Los Angeles Times’ Festival of Books and Make Music Pasadena. Performing alongside well-known artists including Lila Downs, Grimes, Hello Seahorse!, La Santa Cecilia, Dengue Fever, Las Cafeteras, members of Blondie and Jane’s Addiction. Their videos have been featured on MTV Tr3́s (tres, Spanish for 3); they’ve performed live at KEXP-FM in-studio and have been written up in Billboard.

The musical collective recently released a video for their single Por La Luna off their highly praised sophomore album Sea Monster. Directed by Camille Stochitch, the video features the band dancing their way through their beautiful home neighborhood in Venice Beach. Matching their funky and infectious beats with Autumn Harrison’s sweet voice produces melodies that are not easily forgotten. Highly recommended for fans of Os Mutantes and Las Cafeteras.
