Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali star in Green Book

Green Book Takes Best Picture at the Oscars

Best Picture goes to Green Book, a true story about a friendship that transcended race, class and a journey through the southern United States in the early 60s.

In the film, Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic, The Lord of the Rings trilogy) plays Tony Lip, an Italian-American bouncer from the Bronx who is hired to drive Dr. Don Shirley, a world-class African-American pianist played by Mahershala Ali (Moonlight, Hidden Figures) on a concert tour from Manhattan to the Deep South. They had to rely on “The Green Book” to guide them to places that were safe for African-Americans to stay or patron at that time.

Octavia Spencer is one of the executive producers of Green Book, which also picked up two other Oscars, one for best Original Screenplay and the other for best Actor in a Supporting Role going to Ali.
